Faulkner to Drop Out of City Commission Race

Covington City Commission candidate Ed Faulkner will drop out of the race after being diagnosed with Still's Disease, a form of inflammatory arthritis that attacks the joints and muscles. Faulkner began to notice the symptoms while on the campaign trail and after only walking a couple blocks he said it started to feel as if he had run two or three miles without any preparation. The Pointe Benton resident finished fifth out of eight in the May primary and was certainly in contention to land one of the four seats on the City Commission on November 6. "I was really excited about it, I spent a lot of time and effort and got a lot of great supporters, but you got to do what you got to do, especially when you get to be my age," said Faulkner, 63.
It was seven or eight weeks ago when Faulkner first started to feel sick and began visits to what would become a series of doctors. He started medication three weeks ago and said that his doctor told him the disease will take a year or two to run its course. "It's not one of these super terrible immune diseases like ALS or MS but nonetheless it left me very weak and, you know, unable to participate in the campaign the way I would, so I'm very disappointed," he said. "I've never been sick in my life." Faulkner is an active man and in addition to being spotted at various city events in his classic car he is also heavily involved with greyhound rescues and has several at home.
Faulkner will retire at the end of the year from Sun Chemical where he is employed as a business director. He was chairman of Covington's board of adjustments and served on the Linden Grove Cemetery board of overseers before resigning from both posts in order to run for office. He was also heavily supported by incumbent City Commissioner Steve Frank who is seeking reelection in the same race. Faulkner has not yet formally withdrawn but will do so this coming week. He says the medications have helped to stop the pain but the symptoms of fatigue remain. When he is able he hopes to return to contributing his abilities to the City of Covington.
