Photos: River City Mayors Face Off in Bocce Ball Tournament
The annual Mayors Bocce Ball Tournament kicked off Newport's Italianfest on Wednesday.
Mayors and city administrators from eight cities made up the bracket that saw an exciting finish down to the wire!
In first-round action, Wilder dumped its neighbor Alexandria while Dayton Mayor Ken Rankle and City Administrator Michael Giffen had no trouble with Covington City Manager Larry Klein and Assistant City Manager/City Solicitor Frank Warnock. Bellevue Mayor Ed Riehl and City Administrator Keith Spoelker had a long battle with Ft. Mitchell Mayor Chris Wiest and City Administrator Chris Moriconi before the boys from Bellevue prevailed.
The hometown favorites made up of Newport Mayor Jerry Peluso and City Manager Tom Fromme sailed through the first round when Ludlow didn't show up.
In the semifinals, Dayton, in a quest to defend its two-straight titles, dispatched Wilder while in another hard-fought match, Bellevue ousted the hosts from Newport.
Scrappy Bellevue extended the title game, knotting things up at six apiece but Rankle and Giffen proved to be too much, scoring the last four points (these games went to 10) and bringing the medals back to Dayton for the third straight year.
