What Are Students Learning in College? NKU Part of New Study
Kentucky is one of nine states participating in a new collaborative to better assess what students are learning in their college studies.
The University of Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University and Hazard Community and Technical College are among the 68 two-year and four-year institutions participating in the Multi-State Collaborative to Advance Learning Outcomes Assessment.
The Council on Postsecondary Education will work with the three campuses and coordinate the state’s effort.
“Participation in this collaboration moves Kentucky to the forefront of assessing academic quality,” said Aaron Thompson, the Council’s executive vice president and chief academic officer. “We are excited to team up with other states to help students develop the skills and competencies necessary to meet workforce needs and to become responsible citizens.”
Other states include Connecticut, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island and Utah.
The initiative was announced earlier this week by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will fund the initial year of the program.
Participating colleges and universities will document how well students are achieving key learning outcomes like quantitative reasoning, written communication and critical thinking. Faculty from participating institutions will apply a common evaluation tool to work that students have produced during the course of their college studies.
