Sports Briefs: Highlands Star to Be Starting QB at UK, New NKU Soccer Jerseys,

NKU SOCCER

  • Northern Kentucky and UK played to a scoreless tie on Sunday at an exhibition game at NKU in front of a record crowd of nearly 2,000 fans. The Norse will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, this weekend to take on the Belmont Bruins on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 4 pm.

  • The Norse unveiled new uniforms on Sunday. The soccer community often refers to their uniforms as kits. (Pictured above in a provided photo taken by Kody Kahle)

  • NKU goalkeeper, A.J. Fleak was named the preseason Atlantic Sun Goalie of the Year, voted by the conference's coaches.

Football

  • UK quarterback Patrick Towles was named the starter by Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops. The sophomore, and former Highland Bluebird, beat out Reese Phillips and Drew Barker for the starting spot.

  • The high-school football regular season starts Friday. Check out our previews of Holmes, NewCath, Newport, and Ludlow and we'll have more this week.

  • Holmes and Newport Catholic scrimmaged in football on Friday night to get ready for their respective season opener on August 22. RCN's Brian Frey snapped some action shots from the game.

Volleyball

  • Kentucky state runner-up, Notre Dame Academy, begins their volleyball season on Tuesday when they take on Scott at 5pm.
