Remke Closing Its Newport Location

A sad development at the Newport Plaza where a longtime tenant has announced its impending closure.

Remke Market will leave Newport on March 8.

“The decision to close our Newport location was a difficult one, and we recognize that it has a tremendous impact on both our associates and customers,” said Remke Markets President Matthew Remke, in a news release. “Our Newport associates live out the Remke brand every day, and we hope they continue to grow with us at our other locations.”

The Carothers Road location is the only one affected by closure, Remke said.

Newport City Manager Tom Fromme called it "bad news" and "depressing". "I just think it's an alternative to Kroger and so it gives the shoppers more than one option and it's a smaller store so it has a different feel to it, so I hate to see them go," Fromme said.

The Newport store employs 58 associates who will have the opportunity to explore available positions in other Remke Markets locations, as the intention is to transition as many associates as possible, Remke said. Those who are not able to transition to another store will receive outplacement support. Eligible associates will receive severance benefits.

Fromme said he was not completely surprised by the news as the location's Bank of Kentucky branch and pharmacy had both closed. He is also optimistic that the space will be filled quickly. When Sears closed, it was replaced by a new Planet Fitness and Verizon store, and when Blockbuster closed, a fast-casual restaurant called Jalapeno's went in its place. A mattress store has also opened in the development.

"We have a whole lot of interest going on," Fromme said. "There's a lot of development going on in Newport so the excitement of the (Newport) Pavilion has spilled over to the other side of Carothers."
