NKU's Persons is Freshman of the Year, He & Billups Named to Second Team
For the first time in program history since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference, two Northern Kentucky University players were given postseason conference honors. Freshman guard Tayler Persons was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, while he and junior center Jalen Billups were named to the A-Sun All-Conference Second Team.
Persons is the only player in the A-Sun to rank in the top-10 in scoring (13.1 ppg), and assists (3.7 apg), and top-20 in rebounds (4.5 rpg). Persons was named the Atlantic-Sun Newcomer of the Week three times this season.
Billups put together an impressive season, improving as the year went on. The junior ended up with averages of 13.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He made 74.6 percent of his shots against A-Sun competition, nearly 20 percent better than any other conference player. Billups ranks third in the nation in field-goal percentage at 69.7 percent.
Persons and Billups were vital parts to the Norse 13-16 record this season which is the most wins ever for NKU since joining the NCAA Division I ranks prior to the 2013-14 season.
The Norse host Lipscomb on Tuesday night at Regents Hall in the first A-Sun postseason ever for NKU. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
