NKWD Takes Home Award of Excellence, Tapping Prize at Annual Event

NKWD Wins Excellence Award

On July 28, the Northern Kentucky Water District’s (NKWD) Distribution and Plant Operations groups were presented with KY/TN Section “2015 Award of Excellence” honors for the state of Kentucky.

The award for Water Distribution System Operations – Large System Category is given annually to the water distribution system with more than 33,000 service connections located in the same state as the Water Professionals Conference that exhibits excellence in the operation and management of their system. NKWD has more than 80,000 service connections. The award received by the Fort Thomas Treatment Plant for Operations – Large System Category is given annually to the water treatment plant with more than 10 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity located in the same state as the Water Professionals Conference that exhibits excellence in the operation and management of their plant. The Fort Thomas Treatment Plant has a 44 MGD capacity, with total District capacity at 64 MGD.

The KY/TN Section is one of 43 sections of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), an elite group of professionals who strive to create the best solution based approaches in the supply and protection of drinking water. The event was held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.  

NKWD Tapping Team Posts Sixth Consecutive Win

On July 27, the Northern Kentucky Water District (NKWD) Tappers earned their sixth consecutive 1st place win in the tapping competition at the 2015 KY/TN Section Water Professionals Conference, with a time of 1:29.46. This win qualifies them to represent Kentucky and Tennessee at the National competition in Chicago from June 12-16, 2016. The Louisville Water Company Pure Tappers took second with a time of 1:47.19, and the Wrecking Crew from Memphis Light Gas Water finished third with a time of 1:50.28. The competition is a timed test of water utility teams as they race to open a cement-lined, ductile iron pipe and install a tap.

NKWD and SDI Mascots Particpate in Water Events

During the 2015 KY/TN Section Water Professionals Conference July 26-29th, mascots for conference co-hosts Northern Kentucky Water District (NKWD) and Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1), made appearances at several conference events. James Abbatiello (NKWD) and Jason Crawford (SD1) did an outstanding job as Tapwater Ted and Splash McClean delighting kids and adults alike.  Water for Life was a free event at Newport on the Levee staged to bring awareness to water conservation and water quality. The mascots also cheered the NKWD Tappers on to a sixth straight win and attended the Member Celebration at Great American Ball Park.
