UpTech Names NKU's Kirby to Board of Directors
UpTech, the Covington-based informatics accelerator, announced today that Kevin Kirby, Dean of the College of Informatics and the Evan and Lindsay Stein Professor of Biocomputing at Northern Kentucky University (NKU), will join the UpTech Board of Directors. This appointment comes in UpTech’s fourth year and is part of the organization's efforts to hone its focus and strengthen partnerships.
“UpTech is the only Informatics-based business accelerator in the country with a focus on big data," said Tom Prewitt, UpTech Board Chair. "We happen to have one of the leading Informatics academicians right here leading the College of Informatics at NKU. It is a natural fit, and we are thrilled to have Kevin join the UpTech Board.”
Kirby has a Ph.D. in Computer Science and joined NKU in 1994. He helped found the NKU Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM) in 2000 and the NKU College of Informatics in 2005; he became dean in 2011. He has been principal investigator on two National Science Foundation grants dealing with outreach in Informatics.
“UpTech has been a magnet for digital innovators. So much of what drives the entrepreneurial economy is about making information useful and meaningful, and this is exactly what informatics is," said Kirby. "I am honored and excited to be simultaneously affiliated with the Northern Kentucky University and the Northern Kentucky Accelerator. As a dean my goal has been to enable our students to thrive in this age of innovation and digital transformation, and at the same time to help generate high-powered talent for the region. This dovetails perfectly with UpTech."
