Norse Golf Teams Picked to Finish in Top Five in Horizon League

The Northern Kentucky University men’s golf team was picked to finish fifth out of eight teams in the Horizon League preseason coaches poll.

Reigning champion Cleveland State finished atop the prognostication with 45 total points and four first-place votes.

Wright State followed the Vikings with 39 points and two first-place votes while Youngstown State (37) finished ahead of Oakland (36) by a single point, despite the Golden Grizzlies’ pair of first-place votes.

Northern Kentucky took fifth with 22 points as Valparaiso (19), Detroit (19) and Green Bay (8) rounded out the poll.

The Norse are guided by upperclassmen Clayton Portz, Matt Wetherill, Jacob Brinker and Landon Osborne.

In the 2014-15 season, Portz led NKU with a 73.00 stroke average and improved to post a 72.19 average across six events in the fall campaign. The Springfield, Ohio, native placed in the top ten in all six events including three top-five performances.

Freshman Jacob Poore looks to continue his fall success, where he averaged 75.13 strokes. Poore is one of five Norse averaging under 76 strokes per round.

NKU takes to the links February 29- March 1 for the Houston Baptist Invitational in Houston, Texas before joining the women’s team at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville March 7-8.

Norse Women's Gold Team Picked to Finish 4th in Horizon League

The Northern Kentucky University women’s golf team was selected to finish fourth in the Horizon League according to a preseason poll conducted by each of the League’s eight head coaches.

Oakland and defending champion Youngstown State finished in a tie for first with 46 points and four first-place votes each.

Cleveland State narrowly edged the Norse in the poll, claiming 34 points to NKU’s 30. Green Bay (25), Detroit (18), UIC (17) and Valparaiso (8) rounded out the poll.

NKU boasts a veteran roster with one senior and five juniors while two newcomers, Mimi Cheepborisut and Macy Wright, are slated for their first spring season with the Norse.

In the fall, juniors Ryleigh Waltz and Allison Leigeb led the Norse with averages of 78.36 and 79.57 strokes per round, respectively. Waltz placed in the top ten in four of NKU’s six fall events, while Leigeb posted six top-ten finishes including a first place victory in the NKU Fall Classic.

The spring season is set to begin when the Norse travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for the Benbow Invitational hosted by Butler March 7-8. The tournament is immediately followed by the Bulldog Florida Invitational March 9-10 in Jacksonville.
