NKU Sophomore Named to Preseason All-Conference Baseball Team
Sophomore infielder and pitcher Trey Ganns of the Northern Kentucky University baseball team was named a preseason All-Horizon League selection, the League office announced Wednesday in addition to the 2016 baseball preseason poll.
"We are honored to have Trey selected to the preseason All-Horizon League team," head coach Todd Asalon said. "He definitely deserves this honor because of all the work he has put in. Trey will be relied upon not only to be an offensive force and run producer this season, but also to log quality innings on the mound."
Ganns, a two-way player who was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team at the conclusion of last season, provided consistent offensive production for the Norse and saw action in all but three games. The Burlington native recorded a .296 batting average with 50 hits in addition to being second on the team in RBI with 25 and drawing a team-high 24 walks.
On the mound, Ganns made seven appearances including three starts. The lefty struck out 10 batters over 11.2 innings and accrued a 1-2 record.
The sophomore looks to help lead NKU on both sides of the ball as the Norse open their first season as a member of the Horizon League.
Wright State, the 2015 Horizon League champion, was projected to finish first in the League out of seven total teams after claiming six first-place votes and 36 total points. UIC, the defending regular-season champion, took second in the prognostication with one first-place vote and 27 total points.
Valparaiso and Milwaukee, tabbed third and fourth, were separated by a single point with 25 and 24 points, respectively.
Youngstown State, NKU and Oakland rounded out the poll while Wright State's Sean Murphy was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and UIC's Jake Dahlberg took Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors.
The 2016 campaign begins on Friday, February 19 when NKU opens the year with a four-game series at Troy. The series begins with a 7 p.m. first pitch at Riddle-Pace Field on Friday.
