International Students Career Fair to be Held on Wednesday at UC

The Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber has set a goal to increase the regional talent base by 75,000 people by 2020. Retaining more of the area’s international students is a critical part of that strategy.

Through the Chamber’s Diverse by DesignTM initiative, local colleges and universities are teaming up with area employers for the second International Students Career Fair. The event is noon-4 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 at Great Hall on the University of Cincinnati campus.

More than 400 students from University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State, Northern Kentucky University, Miami University, Thomas More College, Xavier University and the University of Dayton are expected to attend along with local companies and representatives from the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber and Greater Cincinnati’s international chambers.

“Perceptions about the work visa system sometimes keep employers from exploring the options that are available for hiring international students and graduates,” said Mary Stagaman, vice president for regional initiatives for the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. “But there are lots of opportunities to engage these students as interns and co-ops while they are still in school and that can create a path to future employment.”

International graduates provide opportunity for employers, as more than 40 percent of the students studying in our region are earning degrees in high-demand STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) disciplines. Immigration attorneys will be available at the event to discuss with employers the process for sponsoring a student.

“We know that diverse and inclusive organizations have more robust bottom lines,” said Jill Meyer, president and CEO of the Chamber. “Businesses that welcome international students benefit from the experience as much as the students do—maybe more. With more than 7000 international students earning graduate and undergraduate degrees in our region, it just makes smart business-sense to keep more of them here.”
