Mearns Calls for NKU Community to Join Him in Cincinnati Pride Parade
The president of Northern Kentucky University is calling on the campus community to join in the Cincinnati Pride parade on Saturday.
Geoffrey Mearns, in a campus-wide email, reaffirmed the university's commitment to inclusiveness. He was motivated by the June 12 massacre of 49 people gunned down at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
"Our University values inclusiveness, compassion, and respect, and we renew our commitment to creating a community where all people are welcome. We respect the dignity of all people at our University," Mearns wrote.
The president asked that supportive individuals interested in supporting the annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) pride parade. The gathering begins on Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m., at the 7th Street Viaduct in Cincinnati at the intersection of 7th Street and Central Avenue. NKU is group 103 in the parade's line-up. NKU LGBTQ programs director Bonnie Meyer can be reached for further questions at 859-572-5835.
A larger ceremony on the Highland Heights campus is expected to take place in August when students are back in class.
"Many people have asked about an event on campus. We are presently planning a gathering in August so that all of our interested faculty, staff, and students can join us," Mearns wrote. "We will communicate more information as we get closer to the start of the academic year."
