Boys Basketball: Holmes Outlasts Newport
Holmes continued its hot start to the 2016-17 boys basketball season, winning its fourth straight in a shoot-out at Newport on Friday night.
A fast-paced first half saw runs from both teams and several lead changes ending in a 35-35 tie at the break. Newport dropped 80 percent of its shots from behind the 3-point line and was led by senior forward Anthony Harmon's 14 points and five rebounds. Rico Hollis put in 13 and Raaval Commodore added 12 for Holmes in the first half.
In the third quarter, Newport struggled to hit shots and watched as its stat sheet plummeted from 50 percent from the field in the first half to under 30 percent in the second. The Wildcats scored just 4 points in the third quarter. Holmes led 52-39 before the final quarter.
That's when the Wildcats pushed for a comeback.
The strong push cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3 but in the final seconds, a last-shot heave went off the rim as time expired.
Commodore led the Bulldogs with 21 points and 9 rebounds.
Holmes is now 4-0 on the season and hosts Lloyd (4-0) on Tuesday night. Newport drops to 4-1 and visits Newport Central Catholic (0-2) on Wednesday night.
