Op-Ed: Thomas More College Stands with U.S. Catholic Colleges on Immigration Ban

The following is a letter written by Thomas More College president David A. Armstrong. It is in support of a statement issued by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities which opposed the anti-immigrant executive order signed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump late last week.

Thomas More College is the Catholic liberal arts college of the Diocese of Covington, Ky. Inspired by the Catholic intellectual tradition, we challenge students of all faiths to examine the ultimate meaning of life, their place in the world, and their responsibility to others.

Against the backdrop of our college's mission, I gathered today with the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) in Washington, D.C. and signed my support for ACCU's statement on the recent executive order issued by President Trump. In its statement, the ACCU specified "(we) stand in solidarity with other Catholic and higher education organizations that recognize the moral obligation of our country to assist migrants." The ACCU statement also references the statements from Bishop Joe S. Vasquez, chairman of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops' committee on migration, affirming that, "welcoming newcomers and refugees is an act of love and hope", and Pope Francis mentioning, "authentic hospitality is our greatest security against hateful acts of terrorism."

As a values-based institution, Thomas More College stands proudly behind its mission-centered calling to welcome students of all faiths and educate them on their responsibility to others. Thomas More College remains steadfast in its commitment to its Catholic identity to recognize the dignity of each human person and to serve as a place that opens its arms to individuals of all faiths and cultures.

The Catholic Church has built a deep tradition of intellectual exploration through the liberal arts, and guided by that Catholic identity, Thomas More College encourages and values the search for truth present in thoughtful and civilized intellectual discourse within an atmosphere of mutual respect.

The Thomas More Institute for Religious Liberty (IRL) was established to advance the American concept of religious freedom as an inalienable right and the protection of this right for all people. As we continue to advance this mission, Thomas More College welcomes all to participate in this process of education and intellectual discourse at our next IRL event on Friday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 18, at 9 a.m. on our campus.

God Bless,

President David A. Armstrong, J.D.
