New Scoreboards Donated to Newport High School

New scoreboards will be installed at Newport High School's gym, courtesy of St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Commonwealth Orthopedic.
The Newport Board of Education voted to accept the donated scoreboards, which will be installed by Slam Dunk Sports Marketing and will feature the names of the corporate sponsors.
Newport High will approve artwork and design that appears on the scoreboards before they are made.
In other news from this week's board of education meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the school district and the Brighton Center was approved so that students in grades 5 through 8 can be engaged in Brighton's youth leadership development program, which is designed to boost grades and attendance, along with teaching life skills.
The board approved the 2017-18 budget, which offers no raises to employees.
The Campbell Regional Juvenile Detention Center is requesting a name change to Newport Regional School, as suggested by Tim Grayson, the district administrator for the center, who argued that the current name reflects negatively on students as they seek post-secondary education.
Jennifer Mariani was announced as the winner of this year's Rosanne Ginney Teacher of the Year Award. The award was presented by Matt Atkins, principal of Newport Primary School, where Mariani is a teacher.
Several staff members retired this year and were recognized for their service. Donna Walz retired from her position as Instructional Assistant, while Mary Lou Kirk, Gladys Bolton, Jackie McClane, and Charlotte Turner retired from food service, and the director of that department, Andrea Whiles, read their biographies and presented them with gifts. Lillie Griffith also retired but could not attend the meeting.
A video was presented to the board, showing the seniors walking through the schools in their caps and gowns.
