Op-Ed: Join Us as State Legislators Visit Northern Kentucky
In the coming days, eyes across the state will be focused on Northern Kentucky as legislators convene for the biennial Northern Kentucky United Legislative Day. This event will feature legislative committee meetings, a Government Forum luncheon with Senate President Robert Stivers and House Speaker Jeff Hoover, and the first Legislative Research Commission meeting of the 2017 Interim.
As the chair and vice-chair of the Kentucky General Assembly’s Northern Kentucky Caucus, Representative Diane St. Onge and I look forward to welcoming legislators and business stakeholders from across the state to the region. It is truly an honor for us to host such a momentous event kicking off the 2017 Interim. We would like to thank the Northern Kentucky Chamber and its President and CEO, Trey Grayson, for their unwavering support of this biennial tradition showcasing our area and the surrounding communities. Northern Kentucky continues to demonstrate its business-friendly atmosphere by attracting major corporate entities and small businesses alike, as well as by supporting and retaining existing smaller local businesses.
The legislative committees will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, and details will be posted on June 5 on the LRC’s website, www.lrc.ky.gov and can be found on the home page at the “Legislative Calendar” link. The Northern Kentucky Convention Center will host most of our first 2017 Interim meetings, and currently, the Interim Joint Committee agenda is as follows:
· 9:30 a.m. - Judiciary will discuss 2017’s House Bill 129, relating to the Child Abuse Offender Registry, in addition to a discussion on addiction treatment in jails.
· 10:30 a.m. - Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations will include discussions on trade boards in Kentucky, welding safety, and the direct shipment of wine.
· 10:30 a.m. - Tourism, Small Business and Information Technology will hear presentations from the leaders of various businesses and organizations.
· 1:30 p.m. - Appropriations and Revenue will receive updates on the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet’s “Work-Ready Initiative,” as well as a review of recent Economic Development awards from the Cabinet for Economic Development.
If you have a personal interest in any of these subjects or have just always wanted to see a legislative committee hearing but have been unable to attend one in Frankfort, please join us next Wednesday.
