NKY Rep. Thomas Massie 1 of 3 Votes Against Hurricane Aid
The U.S. Congress overwhelmingly approved a funding package to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey, which ravaged parts of Texas and Louisiana late last month. Only three representatives voted against it the measure, which passed 419 to 3.
One of the three nay votes was Thomas Massie, Northern Kentucky's Republican Congressman. He released the following statement on the matter, according to The Courier-Journal:
"With $20 trillion dollars of debt, and in the absence of a budget to guide spending, I believe that unscheduled spending should be offset by equal cuts elsewhere. This bill recklessly increases the national debt because it contains no spending offsets."
Massie was joined by Reps. Justin Amash (R-MI) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) in voting against the bill.
$7.85 billion in aid for Harvey victims was included in the package.
