Suspected Burglar Who Shot Self while Fleeing Police Identified
Covington Police identified the man who died after fleeing officers who responded to a call that a home was being burglarized downtown.
Aurelio Isabel Reyes, Jr., 23, died last Thursday when a gun he was holding discharged.
Police reported that they responded to the scene of a possible burglary on Sixth Street in the Mutter Gottes neighborhood and when approaching the home in question, the suspect fled. An officer spotted a gun in the suspect's hand. When the man attempted to scale a wall by Mother of God Church, he fell, and officers heard the gun discharge.
Reyes was fatally wounded in the head.

Investigators are unsure whether the gunshot was intentional or accidental.
Reyes had a lengthy criminal record in Kenton County, with fifteen arrests since 2012, according to jail records. He was most recently jailed in September for first degree criminal trespassing.
