Holmes Student Wins 4-Year, $280,000 Scholarship

A senior at Holmes High School won a QuestBridge scholarship valued at more than $280,000 over four years.

Jada Cummings plans to attend Emory University in Atlanta.

QuestBridge College Match is a national program that pairs high-achieving, low-income high school seniors with full scholarships to some of the nation's top colleges. In October, Cummings learned that she was one of 5,759 finalists chosen from more than 15,000 applicants.

She is one of 918 winners.

“I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity and I hope that programs like QuestBridge continue to extend into communities like ours,” Cummings said. She plans to study nursing and history and hopes to become a labor and delivery nurse.

At Holmes, Cummings has a 4.3 GPA and ranks fourth in her class. She is in Holmes’s International Baccalaureate program, where high school students take college level courses.

“We’re excited for Jada,’’ said Holmes principal Scott Hornblower. “She has dedicated herself to academic excellence and it’s paid off for her.”

Holmes English teacher Karen Zaino, who encouraged Cummings to apply for the scholarship, said she expects the student to do well.

“Jada’s accomplishment is a reflection of her tireless efforts both in and out of the classroom,’’ Zaino said. “In the three years I have known her, she has pushed herself in every possible endeavor. Although undeniably intellectually gifted, she is more than an outstanding student; she is a truly an exceptional human being who will continue to make her family and community proud in the years ahead. I can’t wait to see what she does with this opportunity.”
