Dayton to Rename Court in Honor of Longtime Coach, Athletic Director

The basketball court at Dayton High School will be named for Coach Stan Steidel.

He graduated from the school in 1959 and went on to have a critical role in the creation of the Kentucky "All A" Classic, a state tournament for smaller schools. The tournament has produced millions of dollars in scholarships for students at those schools.

Steidel coached and served as athletic director at Dayton.

The court will bear his name in January. A detailed list of his achievements over the years can be found here.

"Stan has been in the education business for fifty-two years now," said Superintendent Jay Brewer. "His actions in 1979 to stand up for the Class A students continues to this day. He deserves this recognition and acknowledgement."

The Girls All A Classic will be hosted by Dayton in January, with the title game on January 13.

Other notes:

Rick Wolf, director of teaching and learning, told the board of education that he would like for the district to be a site for ACT testing, which happens in the spring and the fall.

The board approved the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan, as well as the Comprehensive School Improvement Plans for both Lincoln Elementary and Dayton High School.

The board also approved pay raises for sixteen employees who work as instructional assistants or library media clerks. They will be paid fifty cents more on the hour.
