NKY High School Scores: Newport Boys Beat Brossart, More

The Newport Wildcats defeated the Bishop Brossart Mustangs 59-43 on Friday to advance to the championship round of the Swauger Holiday Classic.

Newport’s Donnie Miller starred, as he led all scorers with 14 points. Tahj Harding also played a major role for the Wildcats, scoring 12 points. Bishop Brossart was led by Ethan Ellerman and J.D. Schumacher, who tied for a team-high in points with 10.

Bishop Brossart started the first quarter strong with an 8-0 run, which featured back-to-back 3-pointers from J.D. Schumacher early on to force a Newport timeout. But Newport came out of that timeout strong and stormed back with an 11-0 run that included three 3-pointers, giving them an 11-8 lead. They would close out the quarter with a 13-10 lead.

Bishop Brossart’s Schumacher led all scorers in the first quarter with six points, all of which came via his back-to-back 3-pointers.

Bishop Brossart came out hot again in the second quarter with back-to-back made shots from Ethan Ellerman. But much like the first quarter that run was short-lived and Newport took control from there, closing the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 27-20 lead into the locker room.

Newport’s Tahj Harding scored seven points in the second quarter, and was the biggest part of Newport’s 11-2 run as he scored six of those 11. He led all scorers at halftime with nine points.

Newport began to pull away in the third quarter, as the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to outscore Bishop Brossart 14-9 in the quarter and take a 41-29 lead into the fourth. Newport’s Donnie Miller had six points, all coming in the paint, to lead Newport to its first double-digit lead of the game.

Bishop Brossart made a push in the fourth, cutting the lead down to eight points on multiple occasions, but the two teams traded baskets, and Bishop Brossart got into foul trouble late, spelling bad news for the Mustangs with a double-digit deficit. In the end Newport only strengthened its lead and won by 16 points.

The fourth quarter was the highest-scoring quarter, as Newport outscored Bishop Brossart 18-12 to close out the game.

Newport’s path to a holiday championship continues. After beating Lexington Catholic 59-57 in overtime on Thursday and beating Bishop Brossart on Friday, the Wildcats will head to the championship round of the Swauger Holiday Classic where they will play Lewis County on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bellevue.
