Northern Kentucky Beats Green Bay, Tied for First in Horizon League
Northern Kentucky pulled away from and held off Green Bay Saturday afternoon, and since Milwaukee upset Wright State late that night, the Norse are tied again for first place in the Horizon League.
NKU put on a strong offensive showing early in the second half, pulling away to a 19-point lead, 50 to 31, but the Phoenix fought back to within 5. The Norse were able to outpace Green Bay for the remaining minutes to win, 77 to 65.
Northern Kentucky (14-6, 7-1) was led by Lavone Holland II with 16 points, Drew McDonald who put in 15, and Carson Williams who added 14, and Jordan Garnett who scored 12, all from three-point shots.
Green Bay falls to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in the Horizon League.
NKU got good news later Saturday night when Wright State, which had beaten the Norse on January 11 in Highland Heights, suffered its first conference loss of the season. Both NKU and the Raiders are now 7-1.
Northern Kentucky, which never trailed on Saturday, has won four consecutive conference road games for the first time since beginning Division I play in 2013.
The Norse host Oakland (13-8, 5-3) on Friday at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
