After Six Summer Seasons, NKY Youth Theatre Group is Now Year-Round

After six years presenting summer musicals under the Ft. Thomas Independent Schools umbrella, Commonwealth Artists Student Theatre (CAST) is now a year-round nonprofit youth theatre organization and is starting its first season with a big summer season including Shrek: The Musical.

CAST’s summer season opens June 29 with Broadway veteran and Cincinnati native’s Theresa Rebeck's O Beautiful, which also debuts a new partnership with The Carnegie in Covington.

The collaboration between CAST and The Carnegie will allow the student theater to expand its operations to a year-long company housing most of their programming at The Carnegie.

CAST will offer productions throughout the school year, educational workshops on college readiness, technical theatre, and more as well as assist The Carnegie in their youth programs and outreach.

Auditions for the summer musicals are scheduled at 2-5 p.m. March 10 for O Beautiful and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17 for Shrek and are open to all incoming freshmen through graduating seniors in any high school in the region.

O Beautiful, written with Rebeck’s signature fiercely funny style, explores the lives of high school students, teachers, and their families as they cope in a world of real personal problems and extremist ideological rhetoric that gets so heated that Jesus, Saint Paul, Joan of Arc, John Adams, Patrick Henry, and Benjamin Franklin, among others, show up to weigh in and mix it up.

As topical as tonight’s newscast, O Beautiful looks at the complex realities of our culture in a thought-provoking blend of ancient characters, founding fathers, and your neighborhood high school. Performances are June 29-July 1 and July 6-8.

Shrek: The Musical is, of course, based on DreamWorks Animation’s mega-hi filmt. Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey are joined by a short-tempered Lord Farquaad, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits. Performances are July 13-15 and July 20-22 at the Highlands High School Performing Arts Center.
