Northern Kentucky Wins Horizon League Regular Season Crown
Northern Kentucky claimed its first Horizon League regular season conference championship on Sunday, beating IUPUI in Indianapolis, 75 to 56.
The Norse finish the conference schedule at 15-3 in the league, and 22-8 overall ahead of the Horizon League tournament in Detroit, which starts Friday. The Norse will play Saturday as the number one seed and will look to repeat as champs, after winning the tournament last season and earning NKU's first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, in its first year eligible as a Division I program.
The players will celebrate the regular season title with a net cutting ceremony on Sunday at 8 p.m. at BB&T Arena when they arrive back from the road trip.
Lavone Holland II led all scorers with 17 points. Drew McDonald notched his sixteenth double-double of the season, with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Dantez Walton add 11 points.
The game was close in the first half and the Norse were leading 23 to 17 when a 9 to 0 run gave Northern Kentucky a fifteen point halftime lead, 32 to 17.
The Norse extended their lead in the second half, scoring the first six points and leading 38 to 17.
IUPUI (11-18, 8-10), which upset Wright State on Friday to put NKU back on top of the Horizon League, never got closer than 14 points.
The Horizon League tournament bracket will be released on Sunday evening. The River City News will be in Detroit to cover Motor City Madness and NKU's run towards a second NCAA Tournament bid.
