Girls Basketball: Holmes/Ryle, Scott, Simon Kenton to Play for Regional Titles

Four Northern Kentucky girls basketball teams will have a shot at a trip to the Kentucky Sweet 16.

Holmes and Ryle advanced to face off in the 9th Region while Scott moved to the championship game in the 10th and Simon Kenton won its semifinal and heads to the title game in the 8th.

In the 9th Region, the semifinals featured teams playing each other for the second time this season - and each ended with a different result than in the regular season.

Holmes (21-7) was able to hold off Conner (23-9), 55 to 43. The Cougars had beaten the Bulldogs by 8 earlier in the year but in the rematch, Holmes prevailed.

In the other semifinal, Ryle (27-6) got by Dixie Heights (23-10), 66 to 59. The Colonels had won the previous meeting with the Raiders, but top-seeded Ryle was able to bounce back.

Ryle and Holmes will face off for the 9th Region title on Sunday at 2 p.m. at BB&T Arena. The Raiders easily beat the Bulldogs back in December, 66 to 38.

In the 10th Region, there were two thrillers in the semifinals.

Scott squeaked by Mason County in double overtime, 65 to 63. Scott (19-14) was able to get by Mason Co. (19-12) for the second time this season.

The Eagles will face George Rogers Clark in the finals on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a game at Mason Co. The Lady Cardinals knocked off top-seeded Campbell Co. (29-4) 51 to 48. Earlier in the season, the Camels had beaten George Rogers Clark by 26 points.

In the 8th Region, Simon Kenton (19-10) had no trouble with Oldham County, winning 66 to 41. The Pioneers move on to face top-seeded Anderson County in a game at SK's home court in Independence. Anderson Co. ended the season of Walton-Verona (24-10) 58 to 54.

If Simon Kenton is able to win the 8th Region title, it would set up an all-NKY match-up in the opening round of the Sweet 16, since this year the bracket is set up to pit the 8th and 9th regions against each other.

The winner of the 10th Region would only collide with either of those regions' winners in the state finals.
