Scoreboard: Cov Cath, Dixie Reach 9th Region Final; Simon Kenton Girls Win, Scott Falls
It has been an annual occurrence every season since 2012-13: Covington Catholic is in the finals of the 9th Region boys basketball tournament.
The Colonels put down Cooper in a semifinal match-up of the top two teams in the region, 53 to 49. It was also a re-match of last year's regional final when Cooper won its first title en route to a runner-up finish in the Kentucky Sweet 16.
Cov Cath looks to return to Lexington for the first time since 2015 when it won the state title.
But first, there will be a battle of Colonels.
Dixie Heights ended Holy Cross's season, 62 to 51, after the Indians knocked out a strong Newport team.
Dixie and Cov Cath will face off in the title game on Monday at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights at 7 p.m.
Also on Monday, Scott will play Paris and Campbell County will play George Rogers Clark in the 10th Region semifinals. Scott won the title last year.
On the girls side, Simon Kenton won the 8th Region tournament and will return to the Kentucky Sweet 16 for the second straight year and for the third time in four years. The Pioneers got by top-seeded Anderson County, 80 to 68.
SK will face off with the winner of the 9th Region in the first round of the state tournament, which will be held again at BB&T Arena. Holmes and Ryle will play for that crown on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in the 10th Region, the Scott Eagles came up short against George Rogers Clark, losing the championship game, 68 to 56.
