The deputies added to elementary schools within the Boone County and Walton-Verona school districts will be permanent.
The districts, the sheriff's office, and the fiscal court all made the announcement on Tuesday and will host a news conference at a later date.
The deputies were added by Sheriff Michael Helmig following the school shooting in Florida that left seventeen people, mostly students, dead.
“The existing plan has been met with great appreciation from our community," said Boone County Superintendent Dr. Randy Poe. "Therefore, our board of education has worked with the Sheriff’s Department to make it permanent moving forward.”
The schools and county officials said in a news release that they realized "the importance of protecting our youngest and worked toward that goal together to finance, hire, and equip the additional personnel and train them to be in place in the fall."
