Newport Student Named Governor's Scholar, Scores Perfectly on English Section of ACT
The Newport Board of Education celebrated the achievements of multiple students at its recent meeting.
Cody Baynori was recognized for earning a spot in the Governor's Scholar program, as well as for his perfect score in English on the ACT. He also was a lead in the school musical, Footloose.
Other students were honored for their awards at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition.
Maddy Webb won first place in business plan, Cheyenne Doyen won second place in advertising, and Caralyne Wallace won third place in electronic career portfolio. They will go on to compete nationally with their teacher Paul Sturgeon.
Cassandra Stines and Lauren Scott were honored for their achievements in the National History Day competition. Shannon Gubser is their teacher.
Kelly's Kids were also spotlighted at the meeting.
Newport Independent Schools is preparing to enter its spring testing, and several department heads gave reports as to how their preparations are proceeding.
One of the necessary things is assessing the essential standards on a weekly basis, and regrouping students to address their areas of need in reading and math. The thought is to run the learning checks like a K-Prep test. All students in all areas of the building will test in the same content area on the same day. This assessment will include content from the beginning of the year, and be timed.
Teachers have made sure the second graders are prepared for the third grade K-Prep test. They have also identified "focus" students and will continue to monitor their progress while providing appropriate interventions when necessary. Spirit week and pep rallies will be held to help create excitement with the teachers and students.
The testing is in May.
