Ground Broken on Newport Apartment Project

Ground is now officially broken on the Academy at 4th.

The new apartment project will feature 202 market-rate units in newly constructed buildings on the site of the former 4th Street School, which was torn down.

The first floor will have commercial space and a parking garage, which is already under construction on East Fourth Street between Monmouth and Saratoga Streets.

The $37 million project is slated to be open by the end of 2019.

Carmel, In.-based CRG Residential and Birge & Held are developing the site, which has been home to educational facilities for more than two centuries.

Last year it was announced that the project would pay homage to the city's educational history. The Newport Board of Education sold the site for $2.6 million. The old school was constructed in the 1930s. An effort will be made to save as many historic pieces from inside the Fourth Street School building, as well, and one of the exterior walls will be incorporated into the new apartment development, The River City News previously reported.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday.
