Newport Veteran is Honored in Myrtle Beach for Being an Inspiration to Others
Mike Biggs, an Army veteran from Newport, has won a national Victories for Veterans Award, a prestigious award given annually by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization to deserving disabled veterans who have overcome enormous physical and/or emotional challenges and are an inspiration to others.
As a first sergeant on the preventative medicine team, Biggs saw many disturbing things during his time in service. When he came home, he struggled with transitioning back to civilian life. PTSD was unheard of, so he received no medical or emotional treatment. At his lowest point, he ended up homeless. Biggs finally got the help he needed through a DAV Homeless Stand Down and the following years, returned as a positive role model to help other struggling veterans.
Biggs received his Victories Award at the 2018 Carolina Country Music Fest in Myrtle Beach, SC.
While at the event, Biggs was personally congratulated by country music artist Toby Keith.
