Villa Madonna Changes School Mascot
Villa Madonna Academy will have a change in mascots for its athletics program.
Gone are the Blue Lightning.
Now, the school will be known as the Villa Vikings.
The decision came after four years of lobbying from students who wanted a new symbol to show their sense of a school pride.
In the spring, students voted, and Vikings won out.
“The change is exciting because it was student-generated. They advocated for a return to the Viking mascot, and we all look forward to continued athletic successes as the Villa Vikings," said Pamela McQueen, executive director and principal at Villa Madonna Junior and Senior High Schools.
The Vikings is a reference to the academy's past.
The elementary school athletes competed as the Vikings in the 1970s and 80s. The high school boys teams were also known as the Vikings for one year in the 1990s.
Villa was known as the Vixens until 1992, and then the Vipers from 1993 to 2000, before adopting the Blue Lightning moniker in 2001.
Students and faculty welcomed the news.
The students and faculty share a sense of excitement over the upcoming name change. Elementary principal and Villa alumnae Soshana Marx Bosley `91 said,
“I am a proud Villa Vixen and will always cherish my days at the Academy as a Vixen," said Soshana Marx Bosley, a 1991 graduate who is now principal at the elementary school. "Now, as the elementary principal and as a parent of an eighth grader, I’m excited to celebrate our school spirit as a Villa Viking. Look for me showing my Villa pride by wearing a Viking helmet at home games throughout the school year.”
The new name will launch at a school-wide pep rally on Thursday, August 23, at 2:15 p.m.
Students will learn a traditional Viking chant, try out horns (similar to the gjallarhorn popularized locally at Northern Kentucky University basketball games - when the Norse play), and each will receive a new t-shirt.
The school is still working on a logo. Students will be encouraged to submit their Viking drawings, and then students, faculty, and alumni will have the opportunity to vote.
