Bellevue Jeweler, Watchmaker, and Mayoral Candidate Featured in Cincinnati Magazine for Backyard Pizza Oven
Bellevue jeweler, watchmaker, and mayoral candidate Charlie Cleves was featured in the September 2018 edition of Cincinnati Magazine, which showcases the best pizza in Greater Cincinnati, for the restaurant-sized pizza oven he built in the backyard of his home on Fairfield Avenue in Bellevue.
Cleves, who believes Cincinnati Magazine learned about his oven after someone attended a charity pizza-party event at his house, said he was inspired to build the oven after seeing one his sister had installed at her home in Boston.
“After seeing how much fun people were having making and firing pizzas at my sister’s house in Boston, I thought it would be great to have my own – especially with all the guests I have come over to my house,” Cleves said. “My sister explained that if she were to do it all over again she would have gone for a bigger oven, so I got the biggest oven I could.”
Before each pizza party he and his family have at his home, they make 100 batches of pizza dough for the event. To date, he has only used all 100 batches on one occasion.
“With enough fire, the oven can get to over 1,000 degrees, which can cook the first pizza in about 45 seconds,” Cleves said. “We’ve also experimented with other foods – like a Thanksgiving turkey, steaks, potatoes, and even bread – but the oven is best for baking pizzas.”
Cleves said the oven, which was built in 2010, took about five months to install. He estimates that he has spent approximately $23,000 into building it, including the oven itself, the brickwork around the oven, and the oven’s copper roof.
