Photos: Inside Historic Newport Shoe Building

The historic Nie Shoe Repair building on West 11th Street in Newport is in the midst of a makeover.

Brian Malone purchased the building earlier this year and plans to restore it to make it usable as a mixed-use project.

There will be new and restored windows, new doors, and restoration of the original Nie Shoe street sign.

On Saturday, Malone hosted an open-house to celebrate the $5,000 grant awarded to the project by ReNewport, which handed out $20,000 this year for four facade improvement projects around town.

The open-house showed off the new windows on the upper floor, which had been boarded up, and also some of the old shoe supply and equipment still in the building.
