Mansion Hill Bridal Transforms Historic Newport Building

A new business will open in an old building in Newport, and will celebrate with a ribbon cutting on Friday.

Mansion Hill Bridal, owned by Claire Canter, 24, a graduate of the Fashion School at Kent State University, opens Friday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.

The 124-year old building at 402 Overton Street in the city's historic East Row neighborhood was preserved and restored to its original 1894 condition, a news release said.

Canter, and her mother, interior designer and University of Cincinnati graduate Amanada Canter, who now builds custom homes, took on the project together.

The younger Canter worked in the business in Florence, Italy, New York City, and Walt Disney World.

The building originally housed Overton Market, and also was home to a butcher shop, a barber shop, and a drug store, Canter said, noting old advertisements that were discovered during the restoration process. Gruel's Greaseless Cream ads provided some details.

The new owners have created unique window displays from discarded vintage building materials.

Mansion Hill Bridal will help brides-to-be find their dream wedding dress by appointment. It features wedding dresses, veils, accessories, jewelry, and headpieces.
