Newport: Teachers Visit Students' Homes Before New Year Starts
Newport Independent Schools will continue its annual tradition of teachers and staff spreading out across the city to meet with students and parents in their homes during Home Visit Day on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, The Back 2 School Bash will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Newport Stadium, which is on the campus at Newport High School, 900 E. 6th St. in Newport.
Home Visit Day, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is an opportunity for students to meet and get to know the teachers they will have during the 2017-18 school year, which begins Aug. 23rd. The event is sponsored by Pompilio's Italian Restaurant, the legendary Newport restaurant that is owned and operated by Newport High School alumni Larry Geiger and Joe Bristow.
Newport is one of the few school districts in the nation to take the innovative step of visiting students at their homes before the start of the school year.
"Home Visit Day is great for not just the students, but also the teachers," said Newport Independent School District Superintendent Kelly Middleton. "Teachers not only get a chance to meet and talk to their students, but they also have a unique and valuable opportunity to experience the kids not just in their homes, but on the porch, or even under a tree in the front yard. Many of the parents like to meet outside. And our teachers always come back from Home Visit Day with more empathy for their students."
Parents, students and visitors can also meet teachers, administrators and staff during the Back 2 School Bash. Inflatables, games, music and activities will also be available. Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
The Bash will also feature the Wildcat Hustle, an opportunity to run, jog or walk along an approximately one mile route on the campus of Newport High School and Ralph Mussman Park.
