Norse Win Two but Drop Title Game in Bahamas Tournament
Northern Kentucky saw its four-game winning streak snapped late Sunday night in the waning moments of the title game of the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase.
The Norse dispatched Iona and James Madison in the first two rounds, but relinquished a late lead and allowed Vermont to steal the championship, 66-64.
The Catamounts converted a shot with three seconds left in the game to get the win.
Northern Kentucky is now 4-1 to start the season.
Lavone Holland II led the Norse with 14 points while Carson Williams added 12 and Drew McDonald put in 10. Dantez Walton and Jordan Garnett scored 9 points each.
NKU started slow, falling behind early 7-0 but soared to a 22-16 lead midway through the first half. The Norse led by as many as 8 points in the first half, and led 35-33 at the half.
NKU pushed its lead to 13 points with just over nine minutes left in the game, but Vermont answered with 12 straight points, ultimately taking the lead 64-62 with 2:23 to play.
With the score tied at 64, Vermont's Trae Bell-Haynes, who scored 19 points in the game, converted a lay-up with 3 seconds left to put the Catamounts up for good, 66-64.
Vermont's Anthony Lamb led all scorers with 26 points.
NKU shot 46.3 percent from the field and hit 6 of 22 three-point attempts.
Vermont is the third team from the 2017 NCAA Tournament faced by the Norse already this season.
NKU returns to action on Saturday, November 25 at Memphis with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. (Eastern).
