Taxi Driver Shot, Killed in Newport
A taxi driver was shot and killed in Newport while a passenger was in the back seat, and investigators believe it may have the result of a drug deal gone bad.
According to media reports, citing Newport Police, a suspect approached the taxi and attempted to rob the driver.
That driver ended up being shot in the chest.
He then tried to speed away, but moments later crashed into a tree near Tenth Street and Washington Avenue.
The driver was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was later identified as David DePhillips, 38.
Late Wednesday night, Justin Russell, 20, of Newport, was arrested and charged with murder as well as operating a moped without a license. He is being held without bond at the Campbell County Detention Center.
Police, according to media reports, believe that DePhillips may have attempted to pay for drugs with counterfeit money, prompting the shooting.
The female passenger was not hurt.
