NKY High School Scores: Holy Cross Gets By Holmes, Newport Rolls Over Highlands, More
The Holy Cross boys basketball team defeated Holmes 55-52 on Friday in a game that came down to the final seconds.
The win came in large part thanks to the team’s leading scorer Parker Zimmerman. Zimmerman had 22 points for the Indians, a game-high. The senior guard averages a team-best 16.4 points per game. Holy Cross also got a big contribution from senior guard Nolan Schrand. Schrand had nine points. He entered the game as Holy Cross’ second-leading scorer with 15.2 PPG.
Holmes got a big performance from senior forward Kerez Race, who led the team with 15 points, helping the Bulldogs stay close.
Holy Cross got off to a great start, going on a 10-0 run early in the first quarter. That run featured back-to-back 3-pointers from Zimmerman, who had 13 points in the opening quarter. Holy Cross also closed the quarter with a run, outscoring the Bulldogs 9-0 to go into the second period up 19-9.
Both teams traded shots in the second quarter, as neither team was able to go on a big run. Zimmerman built on his hot start, scoring six points to bring his total to 19 at the half. Holmes outscored Holy Cross by one in the quarter, and the two teams went to the half with the Indians leading 29-20.
Holmes drew a bit closer in the third quarter, as a balanced attack helped the Bulldogs cut it to six points. Five different players scored in the third for Holmes, and they held Holy Cross to nine points. At the start of the fourth quarter, Holy Cross led 38-32.
Holy Cross seemed to pull out of reach of Holmes, as an early 5-0 run put the Indians up 12 points. Down 48-36, the Bulldogs put together an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four points. Every point on that run was scored by senior guard Jarrod Miller. A huge and-one from junior guard Andrew Wahl pushed the lead back to six for Holy Cross. Holmes then traded one Holy Cross free throw for back-to-back 3-pointers, one from junior guard Tico Pouncey and one from Race, and the lead was down to one point.
There were an abundance of free throws in the final seconds. Wahl pushed the lead to three points for Holy Cross with two makes at the charity stripe. Race answered with two free throws at the other end to cut the lead back to one, but Zimmerman answered right back with two makes, pushing the lead back to three points at 55-52. Both teams committed turnovers on their ensuing possessions, leaving Holmes with a chance to tie the game at the buzzer. A defensive stand from Holy Cross forced a contested shot, and the Indians escaped with a 55-52 win.
With the loss, Holmes falls to 4-8 on the season. They’ll play Mason County at home at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
