Two Withdraw from Dayton, Newport Races as Campbell Ballot is Finalized

Tuesday marked the filing deadline for races in Kentucky that were not required to file in January for the May primary. These races include some municipal governments and all the school boards.

Though candidates running in Dayton and Newport needed to file in January, two candidates have since withdrawn.

Incumbent Dayton City Councilman Joey Tucker announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection.

"I look forward to serving my final five months on council and continue working on the projects we have in front of us," Tucker wrote in a public Facebook post.

Tucker's departure opens up a seat on the 6-member Dayton city council. The other five incumbents - Bill Burns, Jerry Gifford, Ben Baker, Denny Lynn, and Joe Neary - are seeking reelection and are being challenged by Jeff Haas, Alex Kraemer, Bret Neuspickler, and Jeff Volter. The top six candidates will be elected to two-year terms on November 8.

Meanwhile, the field for Newport City Commission has also dwindled. Challenger Matthew Cline has withdrawn from the field and is running for the Newport Board of Education instead, leaving seven candidates to compete for four seats on the city commission. Incumbents Thomas Guidugli, Frank Peluso, and Beth Fennell are seeking reelection to two-year terms. Incumbent John Hayden has decided to run for Campbell District Judge instead. His wife, Nichole Hayden is running as one of four challengers for the Newport city commission, along with former commissioner Ken Rechtin, Rachel Compte, and Bob McCray.

Newport Mayor Jerry Peluso is seeking another four-year term and is being challenged by Christopher Maloney.
