KY Secretary of State Reviews Middle East Trip

From the Office of Kentucky's Secretary of State:

After returning home from the Middle East, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes continued her assessment of military voting procedures, meeting with the Commanding Generals and Army leadership at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell on Monday, September 17, 2012.

Grimes was selected by the United States Secretary of Defense to participate in the program in the Middle East. Traveling to Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, the group met with members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard and learned about the logistics of delivering ballot materials to deployed troops and returning ballots to the United States.

“I was very encouraged by the care taken to ensure the safe delivery of ballots,” said Grimes, “but I believe we can and should make the process easier to navigate to better enable our troops to participate in elections. After seeing first-hand the circumstances under which our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are operating, I am eager to get to work implementing solutions to overcome the voting obstacles they face.”

Upon returning to the United States, Grimes met with Major General Jefforey A. Smith, Commanding General at Fort Knox, and Major General James C. McConville, Commanding General at Fort Campbell, along with voting assistance officers located at the bases for roundtable discussions regarding her impressions and proposals.

“The selflessness and dedication exemplified by the men and women in uniform who serve our country is inspiring,” said Grimes. “As we move forward to improve military voting procedures, I think it is critical to have continued input from and support of the armed services here in the Commonwealth. I look forward to working with them to best meet their needs.”

Grimes will release her assessment of current military voting procedures and announce her proposal for improving the process at a press conference Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda.
