Kentuckians for the Commonwealth will be hosting voter registration drives all over Covington and Newport in the coming days. Spread the word!
The Northern Kentucky chapter of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is hosting a weekend-long series of events they are calling Northern Kentucky Loves Democracy focused on voter registration and participation in the Nov. 6 election.
Chapter member John Morawetz of Erlanger said Northern Kentucky Kentuckians For The Commonwealth members already have registered more than 450 new voters this year at numerous local events, and the weekend events will build on that success. The chapter hopes to use these events to celebrate, participate in and strengthen our democracy.
The chapter will kick off the events on Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. at Pike Street Lounge (266 Pike Street in Covington) with a Dance Party for Democracy, featuring a live local DJ. Chapter members will be available to register voters and help with preparation for the election.
Member Alexandria Searles of Burlington described the Dance Party for Democracy as “a fun and exciting way to reach the community where they are by raising awareness about the election and making sure they are registered to vote.”
On Oct. 6, the Kentuckians For The Commonwealth chapter will be registering voters at the Covington Farmers Market from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Park and Court in Covington; at the Wee Folk Fest from noon – 5 p.m. in Mainstrausse Village at 5th and Main Streets in Covington; and at a concert at the Crazy Fox Saloon at 901 Washington Street in Newport at 7 p.m. The concert will feature local artists Kristine Kruer and the Red Cedars.
The chapter has been registering voters at the Covington Farmers Market all year, and was invited to help register voters at the Wee Folk Fest by some of the organizers for that event.
Members also are happy with the hospitality the Crazy Fox Saloon in Newport has shown, and with musical acts like the Red Cedars and Kristi Kruer. The Red Cedars have been supportive of the organization’s work for some time, and both acts are looking forward to helping encourage people to register to vote.
The chapter will finish the weekend with an informal Candidate Meet-and-Greet with local candidates from across northern Kentucky at Groove Coffee House at 640 Main Street in Covington. This event, which will last from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m., will serve as an opportunity for voters to talk one-on-one with many of the candidates who hope to represent them.
Morawetz looks for many voters are able to come out to this event, saying he hopes, “people have a good time, register lots of voters, and come out to see what the candidates say for themselves.”
The deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 6 general election is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Besides these events, one can also register at a local county clerk’s office.
The chapter would like to thank Pike Street Lounge, the Covington Farmers Market, the Wee Folk Fest, the Crazy Fox Saloon, and Groove Coffee House for their support in helping make this weekend come together.
