New Child Care Center Opens in Latonia

Funshine Child Care is the newest business to open in Latonia and is the third location for day care operator Carrie McClendon who operates two other centers in Covington and Florence.

"Our mission is to serve the working families and especially the lower-income families," McClendon said. "That is who we prefer to serve because they are so underserved."

Child care options are limited in that area which motivated McClendon to open Funshine inside a 7,000 square feet building that once house a bowling alley, next to the Family Dollar on East 32nd Street. Most of the families using McClendon's services receive state assistance from a funding pool that was recently hit by severe cuts in Frankfort. "Our thing is, if they are on state assistance, they are on it because they can't afford (child care)," McClendon said.

The new center serves children from the ages of 6 weeks to 12 years, provides breakfast and lunch, transports students to and from Ninth District and Latonia Elementaries as well as the Biggs Early Childhood Center, and offers a curriculum based on the national preschool standards. McClendon also has the rare distinction of having a master's degree and classroom teaching experience. "Typically, you don't see owners with college degrees," she said. McClendon spent time as a teacher in Cincinnati and with Kenton and Boone County schools.

The new center is home to five employees and is licensed to hold eighty-eight children.

Turning a former bowling alley into a day care center may seem like an impossible task, but building owner Marvin Wischer had the facility transformed in a month and McClendon said that she is thrilled with the transformation. Fun Shine's website says, "We strive to maintain a bright, welcoming facility that is fully functional for everyday child-care needs. Our facility is newly built with large classrooms. The bright color scheme is fun and stimulating for children of all ages."

Funshine's philosophy: "Funshine Childcare was established in 2013 by two certified elementary school teachers who had a mission and passion to provide quality childcare at affordable rates. Education is at the forefront of our program with a planned curriculum for all children, as well as character education at every age. We would love to invite you into our Center to see why you should choose us."
