Cov Cath Beats Holmes 73-72 on Half Court Shot at Buzzer

The 35th District boys basketball championship game lived up to its billing with two of the best teams in the region battling down to the final seconds.
Covington Catholic walked away with the title after a last-second half court shot at the buzzer by Nick Ruthsatz.
The Colonels led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before Holmes powered by Quan Palmer's 21 and James Bolden's 19 points. The Bulldogs took the lead 72-70 with just under eight seconds to play and had three fouls to give. That option seemed to be the preferred strategy as Holmes fouled twice to bring the clock to under three seconds.
On their final possession Covington Catholic (25-6) inbounded the ball at half court and Ruthsatz's desperation shot was nothing but net sending half the near-capacity crowd at the Holmes (28-2) field house into a frenzy, and the other half into quiet dejection.
Holmes had won the previous five district titles.
Both teams advance to the Ninth Region tournament at the Bank of Kentucky Center at Northern Kentucky University next week. Other teams in the regional field include Cooper (33rd District champs), Ryle (33rd District runners-up), Dixie Heights (34th District champs), St. Henry (34th District runners-up), Newport Central Catholic (36th District champs), and Newport (36th District runners-up).
