Sixth 5-Star Recruit Commits to UK Basketball Team
John Calipari did not have to wait long for some positive news following his team’s elimination from the NIT with a loss at Robert Morris.
On Wednesday, Texas high school power forward Julius Randle became the sixth five-star commitment in Calipari’s 2013 recruiting class. Randle is rated as the No. 2 player in the country and No. 1 power forward by Rivals.com. He made the announcement on ESPNU.
He picked UK over Kansas, Florida and NC State.
Randle joins shooting guard Aaron Harrison, point guard Andrew Harrison, center Dakari Johnson, power forward Marcus Lee and shooting guard James Young as five-star commitments in Calipari’s newest No. 1 recruiting class. Bullitt East power forward Derek Willis, rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, has also signed with UK.
Randle missed most of his senior season with a fractured foot, but he returned in time to help Prestonwood Christian earn a Class 5-A private school state championship. He was a late add to the McDonald’s All-American game roster, joining the Harrisons, Johnson, Lee and Young as UK selections.
Calipari cannot comment on Randle’s commitment until he officially signs his National Letter of Intent, but he spoke in general terms following the season-ending loss to Robert Morris about his ongoing recruiting success.
“This program’s fine,” he said. “The recruiting is in good shape. We’re right were we need to be.”
UK remains a finalist for 2013 No. 1 player Andrew Wiggins.
