Funeral Wednesday for Slain Kentucky Officer
A funeral is planned Wednesday for the Bardstown, Kentucky police officer found shot to death early Saturday morning on an off-ramp connecting the Bluegrass Parkway to Highway 55. In a news conference held on Sunday, Kentucky State Police announced that the death of Officer Jason Ellis, 33, was likely premeditated.
There are no announced suspects and KSP is seeking assistance from the public for information that may lead t an arrest.
The Nelson County Coroner's office said that Ellis was shot multiple times by a 12-guage shotgun and that Ellis's weapon was still in its holster when he was found dead shortly before 3:00 a.m. by a passerby.
Ellis was married and had two children. He is the only officer killed in the line of duty in the 150-year history of the Bardstown Police Department.
A reward of $6,000 is being offered for information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
Ellis will be laid to rest on Wednesday. A contingent from the Covington Police Department, as well as departments around Kentucky, is expected to attend.
In a news release from the Bardstown Police Department it was announced that Ellis's family agreed to allow media to cover the funeral services at the church and the cemetery with the only restriction being that they do not want their faces shown during the actual funeral.
The news release also indicated that for those wishing to pay tribute to, "Please let the community know they are ENCOURAGED to stage along the procession route to show support to the family and honor Officer Ellis. Signs, flags, etc. are encouraged."
Ellis grew up in the Greater Cincinnati area and graduated from Glen Este High School in Clermont County. His wife spoke to the media and you can hear from her via WKRC.
