Special Ceremony for Holmes Grad Who is Headed to Boot Camp

Charles Columb has completed his studies at Holmes High School but will not be able to attend graduation on June 7 because he has enlisted in the United States Army and leaves for boot camp four days earlier.

The district didn't want Charles to miss out so at Wednesday's Board of Education meeting a special graduation ceremony was held for him and his family.

When Covington Independent Public Schools Superintendent Lynda Jackson learned of his situation, she invited Charles and his family to the board meeting to honor him and hold a graduation-like service.

It was a celebration that Charles will always remember, he said wearing his red cap and gown.

His parents, other family members and friends attended and some became emotional, wiping away tears.

Those in attendance gave Charles a standing ovation and Board members stood in line to shake his hand.

Jackson read citations from Kentucky elected officials before presenting Charles with his Holmes High  School diploma.

Charles, looking serious the entire time, gladly accepted.

“We are proud of you and wish you well,’’ Mrs. Jackson said.
