Sporting News: NKU Men's Basketball Picked to Finish 8th in Conference

The Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook picked Northern Kentucky to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Defending Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament champion Florida Gulf Coast, which made a dramatic Cinderella run to the Sweet Sixteen last season, is the preseason favorite, according to the national publication. USC Upstate is picked second, followed by Mercer, Jacksonville and East Tennessee State to round out the top five.

Stetson is selected sixth, followed by North Florida, Northern Kentucky, Lipscomb and Kennesaw State.

USC Upstate's Torrey Craig is the publication's selection as the Atlantic Sun Conference's top player.

The publication notes that Northern Kentucky "was much better than most expected" during its first year in Division I while "playing an ambitious non-conference schedule" last season. The Norse met Ohio State, Texas Tech, San Francisco, San Diego and Tulsa last season.

Northern Kentucky begins the season Nov. 8 with a road game at Purdue. The Norse meet Kentucky, ranked No. 1 nationally in the Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook, on Nov. 10 in Lexington.
