Donna Salyers Launches Faux Fur Design Contest in NYC, Will Appear on Shop HQ

The Humane Society of the United States and Donna Salyers’ Fabulous-Furs have launched a faux-fur design competition at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. Since 2009, The HSUS has been presenting at the prestigious design school to educate students about the problems associated with animal fur.

“The HSUS is thrilled to be working with a school that has produced many of today’s top designers," said Michelle McDonald, fashion outreach manager for The HSUS. "This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to educate the next generation of fashion designers. There are many warm and fashionable alternatives for people who want the look and feel of animal fur but without the cruelty.”

The contest will challenge students to create faux fur designs within the categories of women’s wear, menswear, children’s wear or accessories to be developed for inclusion in their senior thesis or other major studio project.

“At Parsons, it is important for our students to be educated on both sides of every issue," Fiona Dieffenbacher, director of the BFA Fashion Design program at Parsons. "We seek to graduate design thinkers who are able to establish a personal rationale based on their knowledge of material sources and production practices.”

The contest launched on Aug. 23, 2013 with a workshop lead by Donna Salyers, founder and President of Donna Salyers’ Fabulous-Furs, on techniques she has developed during her 25 years working with faux fur.

“It was a pleasure to teach a faux-fur workshop at the legendary Parsons," Salyers said. "It was my long-ago dream to attend Parsons, so having a chance to share with the next generation of designers the techniques we’ve developed at Fabulous-Furs was a special treat. Their excitement, energy and enthusiasm for luxurious options to animal fur truly makes animal fur pointless and unnecessary.”

Later this year, six finalists will be selected by a panel of industry experts to receive sponsored material from Donna Salyers’ Fabulous-Furs. The finalists will be judged for inclusion in future exhibitions at Parsons, and will compete to win cash prizes awarded by The HSUS.

Inspiration for Fabulous-Furs came more than two decades ago when Donna was driving to a fur salon, thrilled to be purchasing a full-length Mink coat. Ironically, a radio broadcast on her car radio described kittens being skinned alive to become “Mink” teddy bears. Horrified she was about to purchase a “kitty” coat, Donna was inspired to create a luxurious fur alternative. A year later, in 1989, from the basement of her Cincinnati home, Donna launched Fabulous-Furs, selling a single product, a faux fur coat sewing kit.

Today the company she began as a tribute to animals dominates the industry as the World leader.

As a multi-channel fashion retailer and vertically integrated manufacturer of women’s coats, jackets, apparel, accessories and home goods, Donna Salyers’ Fabulous-Furs has a core focus on faux fur and animal print products. Fabulous-Furs products are sold in over 1,500 stores, including brands such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and W Hotels, by mail-order and the Internet.

With a showroom located at 20 W. 11th Street in Covington, the 25-year old company, known for the world’s finest faux furs, makes about 60% of its products in its 110,000 sq. ft. facility.
