Comeback Falls Short as NKU Drops to 1-6
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Kavin Tilbury scored 14 points as Texas State posted a 70-61 victory against Northern Kentucky in the Cure UCD Classic on Saturday night.
Phil Hawkins and Joel Wright each added 11 points for Texas State, which built a 21-point lead in the second half and held off a late Northern Kentucky rally. The Bobcats hit 11-for-16 (.688) from 3-point range and improved to 2-5.
"When you have a team hit that percentage, it's hard to beat them," Norse head coach Dave Bezold said. "We gave great effort and made a nice comeback in the second half, but we just fell behind by too many points."
Tyler White scored 14 points to lead Northern Kentucky (1-6). The Norse sliced the Texas State lead to seven points (68-61) with just under two minutes left on the clock when Jack Flournoy buried a 3-pointer, but the Bobcats hit a pair of free throws and escaped with the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Jordan Jackson, Todd Johnson and Cole Murray each scored nine points for the Norse, who shot 44 percent from the field. Northern Kentucky was 9-for-22 from 3-point range. Jackson and White both finished with three steals.
Texas State jumped out to a 42-23 halftime lead after making 60 percent of its shots from the field. Tilbury scored 10 points before the break to spark the Bobcats. Murray drained a pair of treys for Northern Kentucky in the first half, but the Norse converted just 28 percent of their shots from the field before intermission.
The Norse return to action Dec. 7 with a road game at Tennessee-Martin.
