Late Run Leads UT-Martin Over NKU, 79-66
MARTIN, Tenn. – Justin Childs and Myles Taylor each scored 15 points off the bench to lead Tennessee Martin to a 79-66 victory against Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
Marshun Newell added 12 points for the Skyhawks, who used a game-ending 14-3 run in the final two minutes to secure the win. Todd Johnson's tip-in had brought Northern Kentucky within a basket (65-63) with 2:23 remaining, but Tennessee Martin countered with its decisive spurt to defeat the Norse in the first meeting between the two programs.
Childs netted eight points during the 14-3 run for the Skyhawks, who improved to 4-8. Tennessee Martin shot 45.8 percent from the field and used a 51-11 advantage in points off the bench to hold off the Norse.
"They hit their free throws down the stretch and made several big shots, so credit Tennessee Martin for that," Norse head coach Dave Bezold said. "It was a hard-fought game, and we had the lead with about five minutes left. We had some turnovers late and missed some makeable shots, but we had our chances."
Jordan Jackson scored 18 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Northern Kentucky, which is now 1-7. Johnson added his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Norse.
Jack Flournoy finished with 14 points, including four 3-point field goals. Flournoy's trey with 5:32 remaining gave Northern Kentucky a 59-55 lead, but Tennessee Martin scored the next 10 points to build a 65-59 advantage.
The Norse made 51.1 percent of their shots from the field and won the rebounding battle by a 33-28 count. Tennessee Martin committed just four turnovers, compared to 16 by Northern Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky plays host to Chattanooga on Dec. 15 at noon in The Bank of Kentucky Center.
